History of Naked City Las Vegas
The history of Naked City Las Vegas stretches back to the 1930s, when the first homes were built in a small neighborhood just west of what would become the famous Las Vegas Strip.
What Is the History of Naked City Las Vegas?
Naked City began as Meadows Addition, later called Meadows Village, one of the earliest residential pockets near downtown Las Vegas. The neighborhood grew steadily through the mid-20th century, with most of its housing stock constructed between 1950 and 1980. Roughly 90% of the buildings were apartment complexes, providing affordable housing for workers in the booming casino and entertainment industry.
During the 1950s and 1960s, showgirls performing on the Strip moved into these apartments because of their low rents and convenient location. The performers became known for sunbathing nude in courtyards and backyards during the daytime hours, earning the neighborhood its lasting nickname. The area covers just 0.15625 square miles but developed one of the highest population densities in Las Vegas at approximately 228,860 people per square mile.
How Did Naked City Change Over the Decades?
The neighborhood began declining in the 1970s as newer suburbs drew families away from central Las Vegas. Crime rates climbed through the following decades and peaked in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Aging apartment buildings deteriorated, and Naked City gained a reputation that overshadowed its colorful origins.
What Does the Future Hold for Naked City?
Recent years have brought renewed interest. The Philly at 215, a development with 81 studio and 6 one bedroom units at 215 Philadelphia Avenue, represents the first new residential construction in the area in over 65 years. California transplants have also begun revitalizing historic properties in the neighborhood. City leaders, including Councilwoman Olivia Diaz, have promoted rebranding the area as the Gateway District, envisioning a mixed income, working class community that serves Strip employees.
Based on Ryan Rose's experience working with Naked City buyers and sellers, the neighborhood's history is central to its investment appeal. He points out that few Las Vegas communities offer this combination of proximity to the Strip, historic character, and entry level pricing, making it a location worth watching as redevelopment gains momentum.
