What Happened to Naked City Las Vegas?

by Ryan Rose

Naked City Las Vegas has transformed from one of the most notorious neighborhoods near the Strip into an emerging redevelopment zone attracting new residents, developers, and small businesses to the 89102 zip code.

How Did Naked City Get Its Reputation?

The neighborhood originally known as Meadows Addition earned the nickname "Naked City" in the 1950s and 1960s when showgirls from nearby Strip casinos would sunbathe nude in their backyards. Gail McQuary on Boston Avenue became one of the most recognized residents during this era around 1956. The earliest homes in the area date to the 1930s, with the majority built between 1950 and 1980. At its peak, roughly 90% of the structures in the area were apartment buildings, creating one of the densest residential zones in the Las Vegas Valley.

What Caused Naked City to Decline?

Through the 1970s the neighborhood began a slow decline as aging housing stock, limited investment, and rising crime made the area less desirable. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, Naked City had some of the highest crime rates in the city. The area, bounded by Sahara Avenue, Valley View Boulevard, Desert Inn Road, and Rancho Drive, became synonymous with poverty and safety concerns. With a poverty rate near 15% and median household income around $49,843, the community faced significant economic challenges that persisted for decades.

Is Naked City Making a Comeback?

Recent years have brought meaningful change to the neighborhood. The Philly at 215 development introduced 87 new residential units to the area, marking the first new construction in Naked City in over 65 years. California transplants have been credited with helping revitalize historic properties, as documented by Fox 5 Vegas in December 2025. City Councilwoman Olivia Diaz has championed the area's transformation, describing it as "the gateway into Las Vegas." Home values in the 89102 zip code have increased 25.1% over the past year, with typical values reaching $335,074. The emergence of indie shops, vintage stores, and creative spaces signals that the neighborhood is actively evolving beyond its past reputation.

Ryan Rose frequently fields questions about Naked City's transformation and explains that the combination of proximity to the Strip, new development like Philly at 215, and steadily rising property values makes this one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in Las Vegas right now.
