Exploration Peak Trail Hiking Guide

by Ryan Rose

Exploration Peak Trail is a short but rewarding summit hike near Spring Valley that climbs to 2,846 feet and delivers panoramic views of the entire Las Vegas Valley. The trail is located within the 80 acre Exploration Peak Park and is one of the most accessible desert hikes in the metro area.

How Long Is the Exploration Peak Trail?

The main out and back trail covers approximately 1.0 mile round trip and takes about 30 minutes to complete at a moderate pace. An alternative loop route extends the hike to roughly 1.3 miles with around 265 feet of elevation gain. Both options lead to the same summit, where hikers are rewarded with 360 degree views that include the Las Vegas Strip skyline, Red Rock Canyon, and the surrounding mountain ranges.

The trail surface is a mix of packed dirt and loose rocky gravel. Some sections can be slippery, so sturdy closed toe footwear is recommended. There is very little shade along the route, making sun protection and water essential, especially during warmer months.

When Is the Best Time to Hike Exploration Peak?

The trail is open year round from dawn to dusk with no admission fee. The most comfortable hiking conditions occur from October through April when daytime temperatures are milder. Summer hikes should be limited to early morning hours before the heat builds. Ryan Rose recommends sunrise visits for the best lighting and cooler temperatures.

The park is dog friendly, and leashed dogs are welcome on the trail. The summit area provides a great spot to rest and take in the views before heading back down.

What Else Is at Exploration Peak Park?

Beyond the hiking trail, Exploration Peak Park features picnic areas, playgrounds, a replica western town and Native American village, an archaeological dig site for kids, and an outdoor amphitheater. The park provides a full day of activities for families who want to combine a hike with other outdoor fun.

The park is located near the Mountain's Edge master planned community, just south of Spring Valley. For help finding a home near Exploration Peak and other outdoor recreation, contact Ryan Rose.
