Turtlehead Peak Hike Near Red Rock Country Club

by Ryan Rose

Turtlehead Peak is a strenuous five mile round trip hike inside Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, located just minutes west of Red Rock Country Club in Summerlin, Las Vegas.

How Difficult Is the Turtlehead Peak Hike?

Turtlehead Peak is one of the most challenging trails in Red Rock Canyon. The route gains approximately 2,000 feet in elevation over roughly 2.5 miles to the summit. The final push to the top involves Class 3 scrambling over loose rock, which means hikers need to use their hands to navigate steep, exposed terrain. This trail is recommended for experienced hikers with solid fitness and comfort on uneven surfaces.

The summit rewards that effort with sweeping 360 degree views of the La Madre Mountains, Sandstone Quarry, and the entire Las Vegas Valley below. On clear days, visibility extends well beyond the city to the surrounding mountain ranges. Most hikers complete the full out and back route in three to four hours.

What Should You Bring for Turtlehead Peak?

Water is the most critical supply. A minimum of two liters per person is recommended, and three liters is safer during warmer months. There is no shade on the upper portion of the trail, so sun protection including a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses is essential. Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support help on the rocky scramble sections near the summit.

Start early, ideally at or before sunrise during spring and fall. Summer ascents are dangerous due to extreme heat and full sun exposure on the upper trail. Winter offers cooler temperatures but shorter daylight hours, so plan your turnaround time accordingly. Timed entry reservations are required for the Red Rock Canyon scenic drive from October through May.

Summit Views Minutes from Home

Few luxury communities anywhere in the country can offer a 2,000 foot summit hike within a ten minute drive. Red Rock Country Club residents who enjoy pushing their limits on the trail have Turtlehead Peak as a regular weekend option rather than a once a year excursion. That blend of high end living and serious outdoor access is what sets this community apart from other guard gated neighborhoods in Las Vegas.
