Kids 18 and under can head to Henderson City Hall with a registered voter and cast a ballot for their favorite ice cream flavor, Cookie Dough or Rainbow Sherbet. Every kid who votes gets an "I Voted" sticker and a free scoop from Purple Penguin Snowcone Shack.
The City of Henderson calls it Henderson Kids Vote, and it is back this fall after the flavors were narrowed down earlier this year. It runs on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 19 to 23 and Oct. 26 to 30, plus a longer day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3. It is free, it is simple, and it only happens at Henderson City Hall.
What Happened
The City of Henderson announced on Oct. 15 that Henderson Kids Vote is returning. FOX5 Las Vegas covered the news on Oct. 16 in a story by Rachel Zalucki. The idea is easy to explain. Kids come along with a grown-up who is a registered voter, and while they are at City Hall, the kids get to cast their own ballot. Not for a person. For ice cream.
The contest started with four ice cream flavors. Earlier this year, in June, kids voted to narrow that list down to two finalists. Those two are Cookie Dough and Rainbow Sherbet. Now the kids who come in this fall get to pick the winner.
Every young voter who takes part gets two things. The first is an "I Voted" sticker, which most kids love to wear for the rest of the day. The second is a free scoop of ice cream from Purple Penguin Snowcone Shack. That is the part that tends to get the most excitement in the back seat on the drive over.
Kids Vote is only available at Henderson City Hall. It is not offered at other locations around the city or the county. City Hall sits in downtown Henderson along Water Street, the same area that hosts many of the city's big community events. The city also said City Hall will offer ASL interpreter services and ADA accommodations during this period, which is good news for families who need them.
The setup is meant to be quick. Kids are not asked to stand in a long line or fill out anything complicated. They pick one of two flavors, collect their sticker and get their treat. For busy parents, that means you can fit it into a lunch break, a day off or a quick stop on the way home. For kids, it means a fun few minutes that ends with ice cream.
Why It Matters to Las Vegas Residents
Free things for kids are always worth knowing about, and this one is about as easy as it gets. There is no ticket, no sign-up and no cost. You show up during the hours, the kids vote on ice cream, and everyone leaves with a sticker and a scoop. For a lot of Henderson families, it is a nice little break in a busy week.
It also gives kids a hands-on look at how City Hall works. Many children have never been inside a city building. Walking in, seeing the space and filling out their own little ballot can make the whole idea of local government feel friendly and real. And because the choice is Cookie Dough versus Rainbow Sherbet, the only debate in the car is about dessert.
Families with more than one kid may find it is a fun way to settle a sibling rivalry. One child is Team Cookie Dough, the other is Team Rainbow Sherbet, and both get ice cream no matter who wins. That is a pretty good deal for parents too.
Grandparents can join the fun too. Any registered voter can bring a child, so this is a great chance for a grandma or grandpa to plan a special afternoon with the grandkids. A trip to City Hall, a sticker, a free scoop and a walk downtown makes for an easy, sweet outing for any generation.
Kids Vote also shows off downtown Henderson. The Water Street area has grown into a real gathering spot, with events like Henderson Hot Rod Days drawing crowds from around the valley. A quick trip to City Hall can turn into a walk along Water Street, a look at the shops and a chance to see how the area keeps changing.
And it is not just for little kids. Anyone 18 and under can take part, so teens can join in too. A teenager might roll their eyes at the idea at first, but free ice cream has a way of winning people over.
There is also something nice about a community event that has nothing to sell. Kids Vote is not a promotion for a product or a ticketed show. It is a city putting a smile on kids' faces with a sticker and a scoop. In a season full of costs, from Halloween costumes to holiday shopping, a free family moment is worth a lot.
For parents who like to teach small life lessons, this is a gentle one. Kids learn that a vote is a choice, that every vote gets counted, and that sometimes your pick wins and sometimes it does not. They also learn that you can disagree with your brother or sister about something and still both walk away happy. Those are good lessons to learn over a scoop of ice cream.
Background and History
Henderson Kids Vote is not brand new. It ran earlier this year in June, when kids cut the original four flavors down to the final two. This fall's round picks the champion between Cookie Dough and Rainbow Sherbet. The reports did not list the two flavors that were dropped in June or share any vote totals, so this fall's results will be the first winner announcement families hear.
The two finalists could not be more different. Cookie Dough is the rich, creamy pick, usually vanilla ice cream packed with chunks of cookie dough. Rainbow Sherbet is the bright, fruity pick, usually a mix of colorful fruit flavors swirled together. One is a classic sweet-tooth favorite, the other is a tangy, colorful treat. It is easy to see why kids picked these two to go head to head.
Here is a fun fact to share with the kids on the drive over. Sherbet is not quite the same as ice cream. It is mostly fruit and sugar, with a small amount of dairy mixed in, which gives it that light, tangy taste. Ice cream has a lot more cream. So in a way, this contest is not just a flavor fight. It is a battle between two kinds of frozen treats. That might make for a lively conversation in the back seat.
The free scoops come from Purple Penguin Snowcone Shack. Teaming up with a local treat shop is a fun touch. It keeps the reward simple and gives kids something they can enjoy right away, instead of a prize they forget about by dinner.
Henderson has a long habit of putting on family-friendly events in its downtown core, from car shows to holiday celebrations. Kids Vote fits right into that. It is small, low-key and free, and it brings families into a city space they might not visit otherwise. It also lines up with a busy season for Henderson families, with Halloween events across the city happening around the same time.
Events like this also help explain why Henderson keeps landing on lists of family-friendly places to live. It is not only the parks and schools. It is that the city takes time to plan small, playful moments for kids. A free ice cream vote at City Hall is the kind of thing families remember and talk about with their friends.
What Happens Next
Kids Vote kicked off on Saturday, Oct. 17. From here, these are the days and hours to know, all at Henderson City Hall. Monday, Oct. 19 through Friday, Oct. 23, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. City Hall is closed Saturday, Oct. 24 and Sunday, Oct. 25. It opens again Monday, Oct. 26 through Friday, Oct. 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, with longer hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
That means you have about two working weeks, plus one long final day, to get the kids in. If weekday daytime hours are hard because of school, the Nov. 3 date runs until 7 p.m., which leaves time to stop by after school or after work. Remember that kids need to come with a registered voter to take part.
If you plan to go on the final day, Nov. 3, expect City Hall to be busier than usual, since it is a big day for the building. Going earlier in the two weekday stretches may be calmer for families with little ones. Either way, the reward is the same: a sticker and a scoop.
After the last day, the votes will be counted and a winning flavor will be named. The reports did not say how or when the city will share the winner, so keep an eye on the City of Henderson's website and social channels in early November. Whether it ends up being Cookie Dough or Rainbow Sherbet, every kid who voted already got their scoop.
A quick planning tip: write the dates on the family calendar now. The middle weekend, Oct. 24 and 25, City Hall is closed, so do not plan a Saturday trip that week. The two full weeks of weekday hours give families plenty of chances, but they go by fast, especially with school, sports and Halloween all happening at the same time.
Ryan's Take
This is my favorite kind of local story. It is simple, it is free, and it makes a regular errand feel special for kids. Henderson does a great job with small community touches like this. When I work with families who are thinking about moving to Henderson, I always tell them that what they will love most is not one big feature, but all the little things. The parks, the events on Water Street, the way the city plans fun stuff for kids. Kids Vote is a perfect example.
It is also a reminder of how much downtown Henderson has grown. Water Street now hosts car shows, festivals and family events, and the area around it keeps getting more attention. For buyers looking at Henderson, being close to a lively downtown with free family events is a real plus. And for kids, a sticker and a free scoop on a weekday afternoon is a pretty great memory to make with mom, dad or grandma.
I will add this for families who are new to the valley. One of the best ways to get to know a city is to show up for the small stuff. Go to the free events. Walk the downtown. Talk to the people at the next table. Kids Vote is an easy first step for a family that just moved to Henderson and wants to feel part of the community. It takes a few minutes, it costs nothing, and the kids will ask to go back.
What You Can Do
Pick a day that works for your family and plan a short trip to Henderson City Hall on Water Street. Bring the kids, and make sure the adult with them is a registered voter. Let the kids talk it over on the way: Cookie Dough or Rainbow Sherbet? Once they cast their vote, they get their "I Voted" sticker and their free scoop from Purple Penguin Snowcone Shack.
Turn it into a little outing. After City Hall, take a walk along Water Street, grab lunch nearby or check out what else is happening downtown that week. If your family is into sports, you could pair it with a visit to the new Henderson Sports and Social Complex. And if you need ASL interpreter services or ADA accommodations, the city said those will be available at City Hall during this period.
For the latest details, check the City of Henderson's elections page at cityofhenderson.com/elections. Hours can change, so a quick look before you go is always smart. Then text us which flavor your kids picked. We are curious which way Henderson's youngest residents will go.
If you have friends or neighbors with young kids, pass this along. Plenty of families never hear about small city events like this until they are over. A quick text to the group chat could mean a free scoop and a fun afternoon for a family you know. And if your kids are already counting down to Halloween, check out our roundup of Henderson Halloween events for more free and low-cost family fun this month.
