Boating in Desert Shores: What You Can and Cannot Use
Boating in Desert Shores is allowed on electric boats, rowboats, paddle boats, sculls, single hull sailboats, pontoon boats, kayaks, and canoes. Gas motors and paddleboards are prohibited. All boats must be at least 8 feet long and registered with the DSCA, with hours running dawn to 10:30 PM daily.
What types of boats are allowed in Desert Shores?
The DSCA permits eight specific boat types on the four private lakes: electric powered boats, rowboats, paddle boats, sculls, single hull sailboats, pontoon boats, kayaks, and canoes. Remote controlled sailboats are also permitted, but other RC boats are prohibited.
Every approved boat must be at least 8 feet in length and registered with the DSCA before launch. Gas motors are not allowed under any circumstances; only electric propulsion is approved for motorized craft. The 8 foot minimum effectively rules out small inflatable rafts and kid sized boats.
What are the Desert Shores boating hours and rules?
Boating hours extend from dawn until 10:30 PM daily, giving residents a longer window than the dawn to dusk fishing schedule. Boats can launch from designated community docks on all four lakes (Jacqueline, Sarah, Maddison, and Lindsey).
Paddleboards are explicitly prohibited per official DSCA policy, which surprises many new residents. Anyone wanting to paddleboard needs to head to a public Las Vegas lake outside the community. Residents 14 and older need a digital DSCA membership ID to use the boats and the beach.
A Take from Ryan Rose, Las Vegas Real Estate Expert
Ryan Rose recommends that buyers ask the seller upfront whether the home includes a registered DSCA boat slip and whether any community boat is included in the sale. Some Desert Shores sellers leave behind a kayak or pontoon, which saves the buyer the registration cycle and the hunt for a boat that meets the 8 foot minimum. The 10:30 PM cutoff also makes sunset cruises more practical here than on most public lakes.
