The Sonic the Hedgehog Speed Cafe opened in Las Vegas Chinatown on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, and it is only here for a limited time. It sits at 5600 Spring Mountain Road, Suite A, in the same spot where the One Piece Cafe closed just a few weeks ago.

This is a family-friendly pop-up built around SEGA's famous blue hedgehog. Think themed decor, a menu full of character names, and merch you can only buy at this location. If you have a kid who loves Sonic, or you grew up playing the games yourself, this is one to put on the calendar soon.

No closing date has been announced yet. That is the catch with a pop-up. It could be here for a while, or it could be gone before you know it. So if this sounds like your kind of outing, it is smart to go sooner rather than later.

Here is everything we know so far, what is on the menu, what it means for Chinatown, and how to plan your visit.

What Happened

The Sonic the Hedgehog Speed Cafe opened its doors on Saturday, Oct. 17. News 3 Las Vegas reported the opening that evening and described it as an immersive, family-friendly dining experience inspired by SEGA's video game franchise. The space has custom Sonic decor. The photos show a big glowing Speed Cafe sign set inside a wall painted to look like the checkered hills and waterfalls from the classic games.

The pop-up is a team effort. SEGA, the company behind Sonic, partnered with restaurateur Andy Nguyen of The Lunchbox Group LLC. Nguyen is a familiar name in this exact spot. He was also the restaurateur behind the One Piece Cafe, which ran at the same address. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the Sonic cafe is at 5600 Spring Mountain Road, Suite A, in the former One Piece Cafe space.

The Las Vegas menu has items you will only find here. News 3 lists these location-exclusive dishes:

  • Vegas Casino Night Dog: shaved prime rib with a horseradish peppercorn crema.
  • Neon Palace Dog: a bacon-wrapped hot dog.
  • Shadow's Ultimate Sandwich.
  • Big's Tackle Box: classic fish and chips made with beer-battered Icelandic cod.

For dessert, there is Amy's Strawberry Smash Blondie and Tails' Tropical Takeoff Tart. The menu also brings back fan favorites: Sonic's Classic Chili Dog, the Knuckles Sandwich and Power-Up Rings. To drink, you can grab a Sonic Boom Lemonade or a Chaos Emerald Refresher.

Orders come in colorful custom packaging with the characters on it. There is also Las Vegas-exclusive Speed Cafe merchandise that is only sold at the pop-up. Prices, hours and an end date were not listed in the reports. We will share them if they are announced.

Why It Matters to Las Vegas Residents

Most of the big themed food experiences in Las Vegas live on the Strip. That means parking fees, crowds and a long day for the kids. This one is different. It is in Chinatown, on Spring Mountain Road, a few minutes west of the Strip. For a lot of locals, that is an easy drive, and Chinatown plazas generally have their own parking lots.

It is also something for families. Sonic has been around since SEGA's first game in 1991, so the fan base covers parents and their kids. A chili dog lunch with a Sonic Boom Lemonade is the kind of outing a 7-year-old remembers. And for parents who played the games on the couch as kids, the decor alone is a fun trip back in time.

The timing works too. October is a busy month for family events around the valley. If you are already planning things like the free UNLV Boo Bash on Oct. 23, this is another easy add for a weekend day. It is indoors, which helps on a warm afternoon or a windy fall day.

There is also a quieter reason this matters. A vacant storefront is never good for a shopping center. When the One Piece Cafe closed on Oct. 2, that space could have sat dark for months. Instead, a new themed concept moved in within about two weeks. That keeps foot traffic coming to the plaza, and that helps the shops and restaurants next door. Busy plazas make for healthier commercial corridors, and healthy corridors are part of what makes nearby neighborhoods attractive.

For gamers, it is a chance to buy merch you cannot get anywhere else. Location-exclusive items tend to be the thing collectors care about most. If you have a Sonic fan in the family with a birthday or the holidays coming up, the merch shelf here might solve a gift problem.

Background and History

This storefront has a fun recent history. The One Piece Cafe opened at 5600 Spring Mountain Road in April 2024. It was the first official restaurant in the United States tied to the hit Japanese manga and anime franchise One Piece. It came from a partnership between Andy Nguyen and Toei Animation. We covered its closing back in September in our story on the One Piece Cafe closing in Chinatown.

That cafe served its last meal on Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, after about two and a half years. At the time, the company said the One Piece concept would keep going as a traveling pop-up, with a new location to be announced. Its Los Angeles cafe stayed open.

So the same restaurateur who brought one big fan franchise to this space has now brought another. That pattern makes sense. Themed cafes built around games and anime have a built-in crowd. Fans will drive across town, and sometimes across state lines, for a menu and merch tied to characters they love. A pop-up format adds urgency. When people know something will not last forever, they tend to go now instead of "someday."

Chinatown itself is a good fit for this kind of concept. The Las Vegas Chinatown area grew up along Spring Mountain Road starting with Chinatown Plaza in the 1990s. Over the years it has become one of the valley's biggest food destinations for locals, with Asian restaurants, dessert shops, bubble tea, karaoke and late-night spots stretching for miles. It already draws a young, food-curious crowd. A Sonic cafe slots right into that mix.

The Sonic name also carries weight outside of games. The character has starred in animated shows and a string of live-action movies over the last several years, which has brought in a whole new wave of young fans. That is a big part of why a Sonic-themed cafe works for families and not just for longtime gamers.

What Happens Next

The big open question is how long the Speed Cafe will stay. News 3 called it a limited-time pop-up, and no end date has been announced. Hours and menu prices were also not included in the first reports. Those details are worth checking right before you go, since pop-ups can change hours on short notice, especially in the first few weeks.

Expect the first few weekends to be the busiest. New themed openings in Las Vegas often draw lines early on, when fans are excited and social media is full of photos. If you want a calmer visit, a weekday lunch or an early weekday dinner is usually the better bet. That is general advice, not a posted rule, so plan for a possible wait either way.

It will also be worth watching what comes next for this storefront once the Sonic run ends. This address has now hosted two fan-franchise concepts in a row from the same restaurateur. If the pattern holds, another themed pop-up could follow. Nothing like that has been announced, so for now, the focus is Sonic. We will keep an eye on it and share any updates on the end date, hours or new menu items as they come out.

One more thing to watch is the One Piece Cafe itself. When it closed, the company said the concept would continue as a traveling pop-up, with the next location still to be announced. Anime fans in Las Vegas who were sad to see it go will want to watch for that news. For now, there is no word on where it lands next or whether it will come back to the valley.

The bigger trend is worth noticing too. Fan-driven food concepts, the kind built around a game, a show or a movie, have become a regular part of the dining scene in big cities. They lean on short runs, exclusive menus and merch you cannot buy online. Las Vegas, with its mix of locals and visitors, is a natural place to test them. Whether more of them come to Chinatown will depend on how busy spots like the Speed Cafe stay over the coming weeks.

Ryan's Take

I love seeing a storefront in Chinatown turn over this fast. Two weeks between the One Piece Cafe closing and a Sonic cafe opening is a good sign. Landlords along Spring Mountain Road do not have to wait long to fill space with something people want to visit. That tells me the corridor still has real energy, and that matters for more than food.

When buyers ask me about living near the center of the valley, one of the first things they want to know is "what is there to do close by?" Chinatown is one of the best answers. You get a huge range of food, late-night options and now family-friendly spots like this one, all a short drive from neighborhoods in Spring Valley and the central part of town. Places like this are part of the everyday quality of life that does not show up on a listing sheet. If your family values being close to fun weekend outings without fighting Strip traffic, that is worth weighing when you choose where to live.

I also think it is a nice reminder that the best local spots are not always the biggest ones. A small suite in a Chinatown plaza can become the place every kid at school is talking about. That kind of neighborhood buzz is fun to watch, and it is one of the reasons I enjoy sharing these stories with you each week.

What You Can Do

Go sooner, not later. This is a limited-time pop-up with no announced end date. If your kids are Sonic fans, do not wait until the holidays and find out it is gone. Put a day on the calendar now.

Know where you are going. The address is 5600 Spring Mountain Road, Suite A, in the space that used to be the One Piece Cafe. Spring Mountain Road gets busy, especially on weekend evenings, so give yourself a few extra minutes for traffic and parking.

Plan your order. If you want the dishes you cannot get anywhere else, look for the Vegas-only items: the Vegas Casino Night Dog, Neon Palace Dog, Shadow's Ultimate Sandwich and Big's Tackle Box. Picky eaters can stick with the Classic Chili Dog or Power-Up Rings. Save room for Amy's Strawberry Smash Blondie or Tails' Tropical Takeoff Tart.

Budget for merch. Prices were not posted in the first reports, but the merch is only sold at this pop-up. If you have a collector in the family, set a budget before you walk in. It makes the visit easier for everyone.

Make a day of it. While you are in Chinatown, explore. Grab bubble tea, try a dessert spot or walk one of the plazas. And if you want more family plans this month, check out the free UNLV Boo Bash on Oct. 23 and the new Henderson sports complex in our related stories above.

Bring the kids, but set expectations. Themed cafes are exciting for little ones, and a line can test anyone's patience. Tell them ahead of time there may be a short wait. Pick their order on the way over so you are not deciding at the counter. A quick game of "spot the Sonic character" on the walls can keep them busy while you wait.
