Amargosa Trail Black Mountain Henderson
The Amargosa Trail in Henderson, NV is a 4.6 mile out and back hike that connects Hidden Falls Park to the edge of Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area. With 578 feet of elevation change and a rocky, gravelly surface, this trail delivers a solid workout without the full day commitment of longer routes in the area. For Black Mountain residents, the Amargosa Trail is one of the most convenient ways to access desert terrain and ancient petroglyphs just south of the neighborhood.
How Hard Is the Amargosa Trail?
The trail is rated moderate, though certain sections push into the challenging range. The maximum gradient reaches 44%, which means some steep pitches require careful footing on loose gravel and rock. The distance between the two trailheads is approximately 2.4 miles one way, making the full out and back trip manageable for most reasonably fit hikers.
The surface is primarily rocky and gravelly throughout, with no paved sections. Hiking boots with good tread are recommended over trail runners, especially on the steeper downhill sections. The trail is narrow in places, and some segments follow exposed ridgelines with limited shade.
Where Does the Amargosa Trail Start?
The most popular starting point is at Hidden Falls Park, located at 281 W. Horizon Drive in Henderson. This trailhead offers parking, restrooms, and water fountains inside the park before you set out. From Hidden Falls, the trail heads south toward Sloan Canyon, gaining elevation as it leaves the developed park area and enters open desert.
The southern terminus connects to the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, where hikers can explore ancient petroglyphs and additional desert trails. This connection makes the Amargosa Trail a gateway to one of Southern Nevada's most significant cultural sites.
What Will You See Along the Way?
The trail passes through classic Mojave Desert terrain with views of the McCullough Range to the south and east. As elevation increases, the landscape opens up with panoramic views of Henderson and the Las Vegas valley to the north. Vegetation includes creosote bush, barrel cactus, and seasonal wildflowers during spring.
The Sloan Canyon connection is the highlight for many hikers. The conservation area contains over 1,700 individual petroglyphs across more than 300 rock art panels, created by indigenous peoples over thousands of years. These ancient markings are protected federal resources and should only be observed from a respectful distance.
