Silver Knights Shut Out in San Diego
The Vegas Golden Knights moved defenseman Ville Heinola back and forth between Las Vegas and Henderson four times in one week. Vegas recalled him from the Henderson Silver Knights on Oct. 11, sent him back on Oct. 14, recalled him again on Oct. 15, and reassigned him to Henderson on Oct. 17. In between, he had three assists in a Silver Knights shutout win.
The shuffle started the same day Vegas placed forward Victor Olofsson on injured reserve. We covered the injury itself in Victor Olofsson Is Out Week-to-Week After That Hit in Seattle. This piece follows what happened next: how one injury rippled down the roster, and how the short drive between T-Mobile Arena and Lee's Family Forum lets Vegas fill holes in a matter of hours.
For local hockey fans, it is a real-time look at how the Henderson-to-Vegas pipeline works. Here is the full timeline, who Heinola is, and why these moves matter more than they look.
What Happened
On Sunday, Oct. 11, Vegas recalled Heinola from Henderson ahead of a two-game road trip through the Central Division, according to Pro Hockey Rumors. The team placed Olofsson on injured reserve the same day, and Olofsson is considered week-to-week. Moving Olofsson to injured reserve opened a roster spot, and Heinola filled it as an extra body. Pro Hockey Rumors noted he was not expected to jump ahead of regular defensemen Jeremy Lauzon or Parker Wotherspoon in the lineup.
Vegas played in Minnesota on Monday, Oct. 12 and lost 4-2. The team played in Nashville on Tuesday, Oct. 13 and won 5-2. Once the trip was over, the team assigned Heinola back to Henderson on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
That same night, Heinola suited up for the Silver Knights at Lee's Family Forum in Henderson. He made it count. RotoWire reported he logged three assists as Henderson shut out the Coachella Valley Firebirds 4-0. Matyas Sapovaliv scored twice, Alexander Holtz added a power-play goal, Joe Fleming scored a shorthanded goal on a penalty shot, and goalie Carl Lindbom made 26 saves for the shutout. The win ended Coachella Valley's four-game point streak, according to the Firebirds' own game recap.
The next day, Thursday, Oct. 15, Vegas recalled Heinola again. Pro Hockey Rumors explained that playing in that Henderson game made him eligible to be recalled. Vegas then beat the Calgary Flames 6-2 that night at T-Mobile Arena, behind a Mark Stone hat trick.
The shuffle was not done. RotoWire reported that Heinola was reassigned to Henderson on Saturday, Oct. 17. That same day, Vegas beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-2 at home to move to 8-2-0, and the Silver Knights beat the Ontario Reign 5-2 in Ontario, California, for their first road win of the season. RotoWire also noted that Vegas was dealing with an upper-body absence for Wotherspoon at the time.
Here is the whole week at a glance:
- Sunday, Oct. 11: Olofsson placed on injured reserve. Heinola recalled from Henderson for the road trip.
- Monday, Oct. 12: Vegas loses 4-2 in Minnesota, ending a four-game win streak.
- Tuesday, Oct. 13: Vegas wins 5-2 in Nashville.
- Wednesday, Oct. 14: Heinola assigned to Henderson. He has three assists that night in a 4-0 win over Coachella Valley at Lee's Family Forum.
- Thursday, Oct. 15: Heinola recalled to Vegas. The Golden Knights beat Calgary 6-2 at T-Mobile Arena.
- Saturday, Oct. 17: Heinola reassigned to Henderson. Vegas beats Pittsburgh 6-2 at home, and Henderson wins 5-2 in Ontario.
That is four moves in seven days for one player, and the Golden Knights went 3-1 over that stretch. Both teams kept winning while the paperwork flew back and forth.
Why It Matters to Las Vegas Residents
Most fans only see the 20 or so players who dress for a Golden Knights game. But the team really runs on a bigger group. When a player gets hurt, the next man up often comes from Henderson. Heinola's week shows that system working in real time. One injury in Vegas led to four transactions in seven days, and the player at the center of it also helped Henderson win a game in between.
The short distance between the two arenas is a big part of why this works. T-Mobile Arena sits on the Strip, and Lee's Family Forum is in Henderson. A player can get the call in the morning and be at the NHL rink later that day. Many AHL teams are hundreds of miles from their NHL clubs. Having the farm team in the same valley makes these quick moves easy, and it means a lot of young players get to know the local area while they wait for their shot.
That matters to fans in a few ways. It means the NHL team can cover injuries without a big drop-off. It means Silver Knights games are a real preview of future Golden Knights. And it means a night at Lee's Family Forum can include players who were on the Vegas roster that same week.
There is a local success story right on the current roster, too. Rookie Trevor Connelly played for the Henderson Silver Knights before he moved up, and he now leads all NHL rookies in goals and points, according to the Golden Knights. When you watch a player like Heinola go up and down, you are watching the same path Connelly took. Some players stick. Some go back. All of them pass through Henderson.
For Henderson families, the Silver Knights are a neighborhood team. Kids who skate at local rinks can watch pros up close, and those pros live and train in the area. The pipeline is not just a roster tool. It is a big part of why hockey has grown so much in Southern Nevada.
Background and History
Heinola is a Finnish defenseman who plays the left side. He was a first-round pick in 2019 and spent his first seven pro seasons in the Winnipeg Jets organization, splitting time between the NHL and the AHL, according to Pro Hockey Rumors. He debuted in Finland's top league, Liiga, at 17 and had 35 points in 63 games there.
His NHL career so far adds up to 58 games, one goal and 12 points. Last season, he played five NHL games for Winnipeg without a point and had 21 points in 44 AHL games. He scored between 26 and 37 points in AHL seasons from 2021 to 2024, and he missed much of the 2024-25 season after ankle surgery. Pro Hockey Rumors described him as a player who brings offensive upside to a Vegas blue line built mostly around defensive players.
Vegas signed Heinola on July 1, 2026, the first day of free agency. It was one of 11 depth signings the team made that day, according to Daily Faceoff. RotoWire reports the deal is for one year at $850,000, and that it is a one-way contract. A one-way contract pays the same salary whether a player is in the NHL or the AHL. Heinola went through waivers in late September, RotoWire reported, and started the season in Henderson.
How a call-up actually works
The words "recall," "assign" and "reassign" can sound like the same thing, so here is the plain version. An NHL team can only carry a set number of players on its active roster. Players under contract who are not on that roster can play for the team's AHL affiliate. When Vegas "recalls" a player, it moves him from Henderson up to the Golden Knights. When it "assigns" or "reassigns" him, it sends him back down to the Silver Knights.
Injured reserve is the other piece of the puzzle. When a player like Olofsson goes on injured reserve, he no longer counts against the active roster while he heals. That frees a spot, and the team can bring someone up to fill it. That is exactly what happened on Oct. 11. Olofsson went on injured reserve, and Heinola came up the same day as an extra player for the road trip.
Once a player is back in Henderson, he can help the Silver Knights right away. Heinola's three-assist night on Oct. 14 shows why teams like having the option. A player who might sit in the press box as an extra in Vegas can instead play real minutes in Henderson, stay sharp, and be ready the next time the phone rings. Pro Hockey Rumors noted that playing in that game is what made him eligible to be recalled the next day.
The Silver Knights have been the Golden Knights' AHL affiliate since the 2020-21 season. This year, they are playing under first-year head coach Joel Ward. Henderson started 1-2 and has since turned it around, with the shutout over Coachella Valley and the road win in Ontario.
What Happens Next
As of Oct. 17, Heinola is back with Henderson. Whether he gets called up again depends on a few things. The biggest is health. Olofsson is week-to-week on injured reserve, and RotoWire noted Wotherspoon's upper-body absence. If either situation changes, Vegas may need another body, and Heinola has shown he can be moved quickly.
The Golden Knights are home Tuesday, Oct. 20 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at 7:30 p.m. at T-Mobile Arena. Watch the team's transaction list on game days. Recalls and reassignments are often announced the morning of a game or right after a road trip, just like they were this week.
It is also worth watching how Vegas handles the rest of its depth. The team signed 11 players on the first day of free agency, according to Daily Faceoff, and several of them, including forwards Raphael Lavoie, Jakub Demek and Joe Fleming, are part of the bigger Vegas and Henderson group. Lavoie picked up his first NHL point in Minnesota during this same road trip. Demek and Fleming both scored for Henderson this week. Each of these players is one injury away from a call, and each one is playing for his next chance.
For the Silver Knights, that churn is just part of the job. Players come and go, and the lineup Joel Ward puts out in Henderson can change from one night to the next. It is a hard way to build chemistry, but it is also what makes Henderson an exciting place to watch young players. Fans there often get to see a player right before he breaks through in Vegas.
In Henderson, keep an eye on how Heinola plays with steady minutes. Three assists in a single game is a good sign. Strong play in the AHL is the fastest way for a depth defenseman to earn the next recall and maybe a longer stay in Vegas.
Ryan's Take
I love stories like this because they show how connected our valley really is. Most people think of the Golden Knights as a Strip thing. But the team's whole system lives here. Players practice at City National Arena in Summerlin, develop in Henderson, and play on the Strip. Many of them live in the valley while they bounce between teams. That is a real part of the local economy, and it brings a steady flow of young pros and their families into our neighborhoods.
For homeowners in Henderson, having a pro team down the street is a quiet perk. Game nights bring people into the area, and families who love hockey often ask me about homes near Lee's Family Forum and the local rinks. When someone is moving here for the lifestyle, little things like a short drive to a Silver Knights game or a youth practice can tip the scales on which neighborhood they pick.
There is a lesson in Heinola's week for anyone thinking about a move, too. Things change fast. A player can be in Nashville on Tuesday and in Henderson on Wednesday. Buyers and sellers deal with their own version of that, whether it is a job change, a growing family, or a new school. The families who handle it best are the ones who know their options before they need them. That is a big part of what I do: helping people understand what their home is worth and what is out there, so a sudden change feels like a plan instead of a scramble.
What You Can Do
If you want to see the pipeline for yourself, go to a Henderson Silver Knights game at Lee's Family Forum. You may see a player who was in the Golden Knights lineup that same week. Schedules and tickets are on the Silver Knights' official website.
If you follow the team closely, check the Golden Knights' transactions page and local hockey news on game days. Recalls like this one often happen quickly, and knowing who is up and who is down will help you understand lineup changes before puck drop. For the next big game, Vegas hosts Tampa Bay on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at T-Mobile Arena.
And if you are a hockey family thinking about where to live in the valley, think about which rinks you use most. Henderson, Summerlin and the southwest all have strong hockey communities. I am happy to walk you through which neighborhoods make the weekday drive to practice easier.
