NDOT Lines Up Night Lane Closures on Rainbow, Sunset, the Airport Connector and U.S. 95 Through Nov. 20

The Nevada Department of Transportation has night lane closures on Rainbow Boulevard, Sunset Road, the southbound Airport Connector and I-11/U.S. 95 running from Nov. 1 through Nov. 20. If you drive in Spring Valley, the south valley near Harry Reid International Airport, or the northwest after dark, plan for one-lane stretches, ramp closures and posted detours.
The good news: most of the work happens at night, from Sunday night through Friday morning, and not during the daytime rush. The bad news: if you work late, catch an early flight, or head home after a show, you will likely hit at least one of these zones. FOX5 Vegas laid out the schedule on Oct. 30. Here is the full list, in plain English, plus tips to get around it.
What Happened
NDOT announced a batch of roadwork and lane closures across the Las Vegas Valley. FOX5 Vegas reporter Brittany Defran covered it in a story titled "NDOT announces major roadwork, lane closures across Las Vegas valley." The work supports pavement improvements and corridor safety upgrades. Here is each project.
Rainbow Boulevard (SR 595) in Spring Valley
- Where: Rainbow Boulevard between Desert Inn Road and Silverstream Avenue
- When: Nov. 1 to Nov. 20, Sunday night through Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- What: Paving, with Rainbow dropping to one lane in each direction at times
- Note: No work Friday or Saturday evenings. Closures will shift as paving moves along.
Sunset Road (SR 562) and the Airport Connector near Harry Reid
- When: Nov. 1 to Nov. 20, Sunday night through Friday morning, 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- What: Paving on Sunset Road, with intermittent closures of the double left lanes on the southbound Airport Connector
- Possible ramp impacts: lane reductions or full closures on the southbound Airport Connector on-ramp to eastbound I-215; lane reductions or closures on the southbound Airport Connector off-ramp to Warm Springs Road; and lane reductions or closures on the southbound Airport Connector off-ramp to Hidden Well Road and westbound I-215
- Detours: will be posted if ramps close
I-11/U.S. 95 in the northwest
- Nov. 1 to Nov. 6, nightly, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.: southbound I-11/U.S. 95 lanes reduced between Lake Mead Boulevard and Rainbow Boulevard. HOV lanes in both directions are also reduced along that stretch.
- Ongoing through Dec. 1, 2027: nightly lane reductions in both directions between Martin Luther King Boulevard and West Lake Mead Boulevard, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning. Traffic may sometimes drop to two lanes.
I-11 SafeTech Corridor work (around the clock through mid-November)
- Northbound I-11/U.S. 95 off-ramp to Decatur Boulevard: closed. You can still reach Decatur by using the northbound off-ramp to Valley View Boulevard.
- Southbound off-ramp to Decatur Boulevard and Valley View Boulevard: lanes reduced.
- Valley View Boulevard on-ramp to northbound I-11/U.S. 95: lanes reduced.
Why It Matters to Las Vegas Residents
These are not tourist roads. Rainbow Boulevard is a main north-south route for people who live in Spring Valley and the southwest valley. Sunset Road and the Airport Connector are how a lot of locals get to and from Harry Reid International Airport. I-11/U.S. 95 is the main freeway for the northwest. So this work hits everyday commuters, not just visitors.
Night closures help most people, since the daytime rush is left alone. But plenty of locals drive at night. Casino and hotel workers on swing and graveyard shifts. Nurses and hospital staff. Restaurant crews closing up. Anyone catching a red-eye or an early morning flight. If that is you, the Rainbow work from 8 p.m. and the Sunset and Airport Connector work from 9 p.m. both run right through your drive.
The airport piece is the one to plan for. If a ramp from the southbound Airport Connector to I-215, Warm Springs or Hidden Well is closed, you will follow a detour. That can add time when you least want it, like on the way to catch a flight before 7 a.m. Give yourself extra time on any trip to or from the airport through Nov. 20.
In the northwest, the closed Decatur off-ramp from northbound U.S. 95 has been a headache for weeks. It stays closed through mid-November. The workaround is the Valley View off-ramp, which still lets you reach Decatur. And the longer I-11 project between MLK and Lake Mead runs at night all the way through Dec. 1, 2027, so northwest drivers should treat night lane reductions there as the new normal for a while.
A Neighborhood-by-Neighborhood Look
Spring Valley and the west valley. The Rainbow Boulevard work runs between Desert Inn Road and Silverstream Avenue. If you live in the neighborhoods along that stretch, you may hear and see crews at night. Expect lights, equipment noise and lane shifts from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on work nights. Getting in and out of side streets onto Rainbow may take a little longer, since one lane each way can be closed at times.
The south valley near the airport. If you live in Enterprise, Silverado Ranch, Southern Highlands or anywhere you use the Airport Connector and I-215 to get home, this is your project. The paving runs from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. The ramps that may close are the southbound Airport Connector ramps to eastbound I-215, Warm Springs Road, and Hidden Well Road with westbound I-215. Detours will be posted if a ramp closes.
The northwest. If you live in Centennial Hills, Skye Canyon or the neighborhoods off U.S. 95, there are two things to know. First, southbound U.S. 95 between Lake Mead and Rainbow loses lanes at night Nov. 1 to 6. Second, the northbound off-ramp to Decatur stays closed through mid-November, so use the Valley View exit. And the nightly I-11 work between MLK and West Lake Mead keeps going for a long time, through Dec. 1, 2027.
Night Work Zone Safety Tips
Driving through a work zone at night takes extra care. It is darker, crews are on foot near traffic, and lanes can shift with little warning. Here are some simple habits that help:
- Slow down to the posted work zone speed, even if the road looks empty.
- Put the phone away. A lane shift can come up fast.
- Watch for flaggers and workers in reflective gear.
- Leave extra space between you and the car ahead.
- Merge early when you see lane-closed signs, instead of racing to the last second.
- Follow the posted detour signs if a ramp is closed, even if your map app says otherwise.
Road crews are working at night so the rest of us can drive smooth roads during the day. Giving them room is the least we can do.
Background and History
None of these projects came out of nowhere. Our coverage of the Rainbow Boulevard project start ran back in August, and we covered I-11/U.S. 95 repaving in late September. What is new this week is the specific Nov. 1 to 20 schedule for Rainbow and for Sunset Road and the Airport Connector, plus the Nov. 1 to 6 southbound U.S. 95 lane reductions.
NDOT says this work supports pavement improvements and safety upgrades along these corridors, with the goal of better mobility and road conditions. Las Vegas roads take a beating. Heavy traffic, big temperature swings and the occasional storm all wear pavement down. Repaving at night is a common way to get the work done without shutting down busy roads during the day.
The SafeTech name on the I-11 work near Decatur and Valley View refers to a corridor project on that stretch of freeway. FOX5 listed its ramp impacts as running around the clock through mid-November. Details on what the SafeTech upgrades include were not in this week's reporting, so we will leave that as NOT FOUND for now rather than guess.
One more piece of background: dates can change. NDOT says schedules are subject to change due to weather or other factors. The storm that hit the valley in late October is a good reminder that Las Vegas weather can still throw a curveball in the fall. If rain moves in, paving can slide to another night.
What Happens Next
Here is the calendar to keep in mind:
- Nov. 1 to 6: southbound I-11/U.S. 95 and HOV lane reductions between Lake Mead and Rainbow, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Nov. 1 to 20: Rainbow Boulevard paving between Desert Inn and Silverstream, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday night to Friday morning
- Nov. 1 to 20: Sunset Road and southbound Airport Connector paving, 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday night to Friday morning
- Through mid-November: northbound U.S. 95 off-ramp to Decatur closed
- Through Dec. 1, 2027: nightly I-11 lane reductions between MLK and West Lake Mead
Weekends are your friend. The Rainbow and Sunset paving schedules both say Sunday night through Friday morning. On Rainbow, NDOT says there is no work on Friday or Saturday evenings. So if you have flexible late-night plans, Friday and Saturday nights should be easier on those two roads.
After Nov. 20, the Rainbow and Sunset work should wrap up, weather allowing. We will watch for NDOT updates and share any changes.
Ryan's Take
Road work is one of those things buyers ask me about all the time. "Is this street always this busy?" "Is that construction going to last forever?" Here is my honest view. Short-term paving like this is a hassle, but it is good news for neighborhoods over time. Smooth, safe roads make an area easier to live in, and that is part of what keeps Spring Valley and the southwest in demand.
If you are house hunting in Spring Valley right now and you tour a home near Rainbow at night, keep in mind that what you see through Nov. 20 is temporary. On the other hand, if you are looking in the northwest near I-11, know that night work there runs until the end of 2027. It will not affect your daytime commute much, but it is worth knowing if you work nights. I always tell buyers to drive a home's commute at the actual time they would drive it before they make an offer. This month, that tip matters more than ever.
If You Are Buying or Selling This Month
Most home showings happen during the day, so this night work should not get in the way of touring homes. But a few things are worth knowing. If you are selling a home near Rainbow Boulevard between Desert Inn and Silverstream, buyers who drive by at night may see work lights and cones. That is temporary, and a good listing description or a quick note from your agent can explain it. Once the fresh pavement is down, it is actually a small plus for the area.
If you are buying, use this month as a chance to learn how a neighborhood really works. Drive to the home at night and early in the morning, not just at 2 p.m. on a Saturday. See how long it takes to get to the airport, to work and to your kids' school. If you are flying in to look at homes, give yourself extra time on the Airport Connector at night. And if you are moving to the northwest, know that the I-11 night work is a long-term project, running to the end of 2027.
What You Can Do
Check before you go. NDOT posts the latest closure info at nvroads.com. NDOT also shares updates through Waze, so turning on a navigation app before a late-night drive is an easy way to catch closures in real time.
A few simple tips for the next three weeks:
- Airport trips: add extra time to any night or early morning trip on the southbound Airport Connector through Nov. 20, especially if you take the ramps to I-215, Warm Springs or Hidden Well.
- Spring Valley: if you use Rainbow between Desert Inn and Silverstream after 8 p.m., think about a parallel route like Jones Boulevard or Durango Drive on work nights.
- Northwest: to reach Decatur from northbound U.S. 95, use the Valley View off-ramp until the Decatur ramp reopens.
- Work zones: slow down, stay alert and give crews room. NDOT asks drivers to use caution in work zones.
- Weekends: Rainbow paving takes Friday and Saturday evenings off, so plan big night outings for then if you can.
