How Did Mesquite Become a City?

By 1898 the name had been shortened from Mesquite Flat to simply Mesquite, and the town continued as a small agricultural community through most of the 20th century. The arrival of Interstate 15 in the 1970s transformed the town's economy by connecting it to Las Vegas and Salt Lake City traffic.
