Hiking Trails Near Northgate: Lone Mountain Loop and Summit
The best hiking trails near Northgate are the Lone Mountain Loop and Summit trails, two very different routes about 4 to 5 miles west of the community in northwest Las Vegas. One is an easy gravel loop, and the other is a short but steep climb.
What Are the Best Hiking Trails Near Northgate?
The two standout hiking trails near Northgate both start at Lone Mountain, and they suit very different fitness levels. The Lone Mountain Loop runs about 3 miles of packed gravel around the base of the peak, with only minimal elevation change. It is graded easy to moderate, which makes it friendly for joggers, cyclists, families with strollers, and leashed dogs. Most walkers finish the full loop in a little over an hour at a relaxed pace.
The Summit Trail is the harder of the two and rewards the effort with a payoff few close in hikes offer. It climbs roughly 1.3 miles round trip over rocky dirt, gaining about 600 feet, with a few short scrambles near the top. From the summit, hikers take in 360 degree views of the Las Vegas valley, which is why sunrise and sunset are the most popular windows. Sturdy shoes with good grip help a lot on the loose, rocky sections.
What Should You Bring Before Hiking Near Northgate?
Bring more water than you think you need, sun protection, and grippy footwear, since the desert sun and loose rock are the two biggest challenges on these trails. There is very little shade on either route, so early morning is the safest and coolest choice in summer, when valley highs can top 105 degrees. Leashed dogs are welcome on both trails, making them a favorite for Northgate pet owners.
The gravel loop works well year round because of its gentle grade, while the steep summit push is best saved for cooler parts of the day. Cell service and water fountains can be limited, so it pays to arrive prepared rather than counting on facilities at the trailhead. Telling someone your plan before a solo summit attempt is a smart habit in the desert heat.
When buyers ask Ryan Rose about Northgate's outdoor options, he recommends the Lone Mountain Loop for everyday walks and the Summit Trail for weekend views. As a Las Vegas Real Estate Expert, he notes that having an easy gravel loop and a real summit climb within a few miles is unusual for a gated pocket this size. He often suggests new residents start on the loop before tackling the steeper, rockier summit.
