The Vegas Golden Knights held their first-ever Filipino Heritage Knight on Thursday, Oct. 15, at T-Mobile Arena, and they used it to show off OneRealm, a new team program that includes a planned ball hockey program for the community. Ball hockey is played on foot with a ball, no skates or ice needed, so it could be one of the easiest ways yet for valley kids to try the sport.
The night itself was a party. Fans walked into Paramount+ Plaza to find Kalahi Dancers on stage, a Jeepney photo spot, a live barong painting, and Filipino food like sisig loaded fries, lechon burgers and lumpia inside the arena. Then the Golden Knights went out and beat the Calgary Flames 6-2, with Mark Stone scoring a third-period hat trick.
Here is what happened on Filipino Heritage Knight, what OneRealm is, what we know (and do not know yet) about the ball hockey program, and why a program like this matters to families across Las Vegas and Henderson.
What Happened
Filipino Heritage Knight was presented by Optum and took place when the Golden Knights hosted the Calgary Flames at T-Mobile Arena on Thursday, Oct. 15. According to the team's Morning Skate Report, written by Lexi Flom for VegasGoldenKnights.com, it was the first-ever Filipino Heritage Knight in franchise history. The night was built to recognize the Filipino community in Las Vegas.
The pregame fun was on Paramount+ Plaza, the outdoor space in front of the arena. The team's lineup included:
- Kalahi Dancers performing on the Allegiant Stage
- A Jeepney bus photo opportunity
- A live barong painting by Graffiti Park Foundation
- Traditional barongs on display from CMC Boutique
- A barong-inspired Honda Civic build
If you are not familiar with those words, here is a quick guide. A Jeepney is the brightly painted, open-backed bus that is a famous sight on the streets of the Philippines. A barong, also called a barong Tagalog, is a light, embroidered dress shirt that is the traditional formal wear for Filipino men. Seeing one painted live, displayed on hangers, and even turned into a car design gave fans a real taste of the culture before puck drop.
Fans who bought tickets through the special Filipino Heritage Knight ticket package received an exclusive VGK-themed barong. Every fan in the building got a OneRealm rally towel. The artwork for the night came from Jonathan "Swoopz" Suarez, a local Las Vegas artist of Filipino heritage. The team says he designed the OneRealm logos as well as the logos for Filipino Heritage Knight and the earlier 9th Island Knight.
The food is what a lot of fans talked about. The team's concession lineup for the night was:
- Sisig loaded fries near Sections 208 and 211
- Lechon burgers at The Carvery by Section 9
- Lumpia outside Sections 5 and 17
Sisig is a sizzling chopped pork dish, lechon is roast pork, and lumpia are crispy fried spring rolls. All three are staples at Filipino family parties, so putting them on the arena menu was a smart way to make the night feel like home for a lot of fans.
The Game Was a Good One Too
The Golden Knights came into the night at 6-2-0 and in first place in the Western Conference. Calgary came in at 1-5-0. The hockey matched the mood in the building. According to the Associated Press story by W.G. Ramirez, published by FOX5 Vegas, Brett Howden scored just 26 seconds into the game. Jack Eichel added a short-handed goal, and Braeden Bowman also scored.
Then Mark Stone took over. He scored all three of his goals in the third period for a hat trick, and Vegas won 6-2. Carter Hart made 28 saves in net. The win moved the Golden Knights to 7-2-0 with 14 points, the most in the NHL at the time. For a first-ever heritage night, it was about as good a result as the team could have asked for.
Why It Matters to Las Vegas Residents
The biggest reason this story matters for families is the ball hockey program. Ice hockey can be a hard sport to start. You need skates, pads, a helmet and a stick, and you need ice time, which usually means paying a rink. Ball hockey strips most of that away. Players run instead of skate, and they use a ball instead of a puck. It can be played in a gym, on a tennis court, in a parking lot or on a cul-de-sac. That makes it one of the cheapest and easiest ways for a kid to find out whether they like hockey.
When the Golden Knights announced OneRealm on Sept. 30, they listed "introductory ball hockey programming" as one of its main parts. That word "introductory" is important. It tells you the program is meant for beginners, not for kids already playing travel hockey. For a family in Spring Valley, North Las Vegas or Henderson that has never been to a rink, that could be the first step into the sport.
The second reason is that these theme nights are a way for local people to see their own culture on the biggest stage in town. Las Vegas has a large and active Filipino community, with Filipino restaurants, bakeries, markets and churches all over the valley. When the hometown NHL team puts lumpia on the menu, brings Kalahi Dancers to the plaza and hands out barongs, it sends a clear message that these neighbors are part of the Golden Knights family.
The third reason is local artists and businesses. Filipino Heritage Knight featured work from a Las Vegas artist, Jonathan "Swoopz" Suarez, a live painting by Graffiti Park Foundation and barongs from CMC Boutique. Events like this put local creators in front of thousands of fans who may never have heard of them. That kind of exposure is good for small businesses and good for the valley's arts scene.
Finally, the merchandise matters for fans who want to support the program. OneRealm gear is sold at The Arsenal at City National Arena in Downtown Summerlin and The Armory at T-Mobile Arena, and the team also listed VegasTeamStore.com. If you live in Summerlin or the southwest valley, The Arsenal is close to home and easy to pop into after a practice or public skate.
A Quick Ball Hockey Primer for Parents
If ball hockey is new to you, here is the simple version. It is hockey on foot. Players wear sneakers, carry a regular hockey stick and chase a hard plastic or rubber ball instead of a puck. The goals look like small hockey nets. The basic ideas are the same as ice hockey: pass, shoot, play defense and work as a team.
For a young kid, that removes the hardest part of starting hockey, which is learning to skate first. A child can pick up a stick and play on day one. Kids who later move to the ice already know how to handle a stick, find open space and pass to a teammate, so the jump feels smaller.
It also fits Las Vegas well. The valley is full of school blacktops, park courts and quiet cul-de-sacs. Kids can play year round when the weather allows, with friends from the same street. That is why a team-backed introductory program, run close to where families live, could be a real boost for the sport here.
Background and History
OneRealm is brand new. The Golden Knights launched it on Sept. 30, 2026, as an outreach program for Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities, often shortened to AANHPI. The team said the goal is to deepen those communities' connection to the Golden Knights and to hockey. Ben Thomas, the team's Director of Cultural Marketing Outreach, described OneRealm as a platform to celebrate the many cultures and traditions in that community and to help people feel like part of the Golden Knights family.
The team listed four main pieces of OneRealm:
- Cultural Theme Knights at T-Mobile Arena
- Culturally relevant content
- Community partnerships
- Introductory ball hockey programming
Filipino Heritage Knight was the second Cultural Theme Knight of the season. The first was 9th Island Knight on Friday, Oct. 2, when the Golden Knights hosted the Anaheim Ducks. That night, presented by Yaamava' Resort and Casino at San Manuel, celebrated the deep connection between Las Vegas and Hawai'i. Locals have long called Las Vegas the "Ninth Island" because so many people from Hawai'i have moved here or visit often. The 9th Island Knight pregame included a virtual surfing competition on Paramount+ Plaza and a hula performance on the Allegiant Stage.
OneRealm gives these fans their own identity inside the larger Golden Knights fan base, with its own events, its own merch and its own social media. It has dedicated Instagram and Facebook accounts at @OneRealmVGK. The team also said OneRealm merchandise went on sale starting Oct. 2, the same night as 9th Island Knight, and that the artwork for both theme nights came from the same local artist, Jonathan "Swoopz" Suarez.
Theme nights are also part of a bigger push this season. The Golden Knights are celebrating their 10th season, and they released a full slate of Season X theme nights before the year started. We covered that lineup in our post on the Golden Knights Season X theme nights. OneRealm adds a community layer on top of that schedule, with more programming planned through the year.
What Happens Next
The big open question is the ball hockey program. As of this writing, the team's posts that we reviewed did not list dates, locations, age groups or cost for it. The OneRealm launch announcement called it "introductory ball hockey programming" and said more community programming is planned throughout the year. That is all we can confirm right now. When the details come out, they will likely be posted on the team's OneRealm community page and the @OneRealmVGK social accounts.
Here is what to watch for when it is announced:
- Where it will be held. Ball hockey can happen at schools, parks or community centers, so look for locations close to your neighborhood.
- Age groups. Introductory programs are often built for younger kids, but watch for teen or family options too.
- Cost and gear. One big draw of ball hockey is that it needs very little equipment. Check whether sticks and balls are provided.
- How to sign up. Free or low-cost youth programs in Las Vegas tend to fill up fast, so be ready to register early.
On the theme night side, OneRealm said more Cultural Theme Knights and community events are planned through the 2026-27 season. The team also said newsletter subscribers get 10 percent off OneRealm merchandise and access to discounted tickets through the season. If you want first word on the next theme night or the ball hockey launch, signing up for the team's emails and following @OneRealmVGK are the two easiest ways to stay in the loop.
On the ice, the Golden Knights keep rolling. The team was 7-2-0 after the Calgary win, and you can follow the rest of the week in our Golden Knights hockey week roundup.
Ryan's Take
I talk to a lot of families who are moving to Las Vegas, and one question comes up all the time: what is there to do here that is not the Strip? The honest answer is a lot more than people think, and the Golden Knights are a big part of it. Between public skating, youth leagues, the Silver Knights in Henderson and now programs like OneRealm, hockey has become part of everyday life in this valley in a way that would have been hard to picture 10 years ago.
The ball hockey piece is what I will be watching. Ice time is limited, and rinks are spread out. For a lot of families, the nearest sheet of ice is a long drive across the valley. Ball hockey can happen at a school or a park down the street. If the Golden Knights put these programs in neighborhoods across the valley, it could bring hockey to kids who would never have tried it. That is the kind of local amenity that makes a neighborhood feel like home, and it is something I will keep sharing with buyers as details come out.
What You Can Do
If your kids are curious about hockey, start following @OneRealmVGK on Instagram or Facebook and keep an eye on the team's OneRealm community page at nhl.com/goldenknights. That is where the ball hockey program details should show up first. In the meantime, a street hockey stick and a ball cost very little, and a driveway or cul-de-sac is all you need to practice. If your kids want to move to the ice, our Vegas youth hockey signup guide walks through house leagues and rinks in Summerlin and the Las Vegas Ice Center.
If you want to celebrate the culture or show your support, OneRealm merch is sold at The Arsenal at City National Arena in Downtown Summerlin, The Armory at T-Mobile Arena and VegasTeamStore.com. And if you missed Filipino Heritage Knight, keep an eye out for future Cultural Theme Knights this season. Ticket packages for theme nights often include an exclusive item, like the VGK barong that package buyers got on Oct. 15, so buy early if you want one.
Finally, support the local people who made the night special. Look up the Kalahi Dancers, the Graffiti Park Foundation, CMC Boutique and the work of local artist Jonathan "Swoopz" Suarez. And if you have never tried sisig, lechon or lumpia, the valley has plenty of Filipino restaurants and bakeries ready to change that.
