VGK Eliminates Ducks, Heads to WCF | Ryan Rose
The Vegas Golden Knights are heading to the Western Conference Final after beating the Anaheim Ducks 5-1 in Game 6 at T-Mobile Arena on May 14. The win closed out the series in six games and puts VGK just four wins away from the Stanley Cup Final. If you are a hockey fan living in Las Vegas, the next two weeks are going to be electric.
From the opening faceoff, this game felt different. Mitch Marner needed just 62 seconds to score one of the most talked-about goals of the entire 2026 playoffs. It was a between-the-legs backhand finish that had T-Mobile Arena shaking before most fans had even settled into their seats. Brett Howden added a short-handed goal. Shea Theodore scored on the power play. And Pavel Dorofeyev put the finishing touches on the night with two third-period goals. Carter Hart was steady in net with 31 saves. The arena roared from start to finish.
This is the third time the Golden Knights have reached the Western Conference Final in their eight-year history. They will face the Colorado Avalanche starting May 20 in Denver, with home games at T-Mobile Arena beginning May 24. For the city of Las Vegas, the playoff run means packed restaurants, busy hotels, and a community rallying around its team once again.
What Happened in Game 6
The Golden Knights came out flying. It took just over a minute for Marner to set the tone. He gathered the puck along the left boards, drove toward the net, and pulled off a between-the-legs finish that beat Ducks goaltender Lukas Dostal clean. The goal was Marner's seventh of the 2026 playoffs. Social media lit up instantly. Fans replayed the move from every angle. Former players called it one of the best playoff goals in recent memory.
But the Golden Knights were not done in the first period. Brett Howden scored a short-handed goal that made it 2-0. That goal was historic. It was Howden's third short-handed goal of the 2026 postseason, tying Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL record for short-handed goals in a single playoff year. Think about that. A role player from the Vegas Golden Knights just matched one of the greatest records held by the greatest hockey player who ever lived. Howden has quietly become one of the most important players in the VGK lineup, and his penalty-kill work has been a major reason the team keeps winning.
Shea Theodore then added a power-play goal to make it 3-0 before the first intermission. The Ducks had no answer. Anaheim managed to get one past Carter Hart in the second period, but it was too little, too late. Hart was rock solid all night, stopping 31 of 32 shots. His poise in the crease gave the Golden Knights the foundation they needed to play aggressive, fast hockey.
The third period belonged to Pavel Dorofeyev. The 24-year-old forward scored twice to push the final score to 5-1. Dorofeyev now has nine goals in the 2026 playoffs, tied for the NHL lead. He had five goals in the last four games of the Ducks series alone, including the overtime winner in Game 5 that saved VGK from a potential Game 7 on the road. Head coach John Tortorella has praised Dorofeyev repeatedly, calling his growth this season remarkable. Dorofeyev finished the regular season with 37 goals and 32 assists, both career highs.
Jack Eichel, the team's captain, continued his brilliant playoff run as well. He recorded an assist in Game 6, bringing his career playoff assist total to 40 in just 47 games. That makes him the fastest American-born player in NHL history to reach that milestone. Eichel also had a team-leading 90 points during the regular season and won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics. He is playing the best hockey of his life right here in Las Vegas.
Why This Matters to Las Vegas Residents
When the Golden Knights go deep in the playoffs, the entire city feels it. This is not just about hockey. Playoff runs bring real economic impact to Las Vegas neighborhoods and businesses. Restaurants around T-Mobile Arena fill up on game nights. Hotels see bumps in bookings. Local bars with playoff watch parties see bigger crowds. Rideshare demand spikes. Retail shops selling VGK gear see lines out the door.
For homeowners, especially those near the Strip and in surrounding communities like Summerlin, Henderson, and Spring Valley, a thriving sports culture adds to the appeal of living in Las Vegas. National media attention on the city during the playoffs reminds the rest of the country that Las Vegas is more than gaming and entertainment. It is a real sports town with passionate fans and a growing community identity built around its teams.
The Golden Knights also bring the community together in ways that go beyond the arena. During Game 6, the team hosted two free watch parties for fans who could not get tickets. One was at Craig Ranch Amphitheater in North Las Vegas. The other was at Water Street Plaza in Henderson. Both events had free admission and free parking. Fans got visits from the VGK Cast, raffle prizes including future game tickets, and access to the VGK merchandise truck. These watch parties will likely continue for the Western Conference Final, and they are a great way for families across Clark County to celebrate together.
There is also the pride factor. The Golden Knights entered the NHL in 2017. In less than a decade, they have won a Stanley Cup (2023) and reached the Western Conference Final three times. Henderson has its own AHL team in the Silver Knights, and Las Vegas just got a PWHL expansion team for the 2026-27 season. This is a full hockey city now, and the Golden Knights' success is the foundation of all of it.
Playoff tickets are also a big story right now. Single-game tickets for the Western Conference Final home games at T-Mobile Arena went on sale May 15 at noon. The team is offering strip packages that bundle all potential home games at a discount. Groups of 10 or more can get savings, and groups of 20 or more can book luxury suites with all-inclusive food, beer, and wine. You can reach the ticketing team at (702) 645-4259 or tickets@vegasgoldenknights.com.
Background and History of the Golden Knights' Playoff Runs
The Vegas Golden Knights have been one of the most successful expansion franchises in all of professional sports. In their very first season (2017-18), they reached the Stanley Cup Final, shocking the hockey world. That Cinderella story created a bond between the team and the city of Las Vegas that has only grown stronger over the years.
In 2023, the Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup, beating the Florida Panthers in five games. The celebration that followed brought the city together in a way that longtime Las Vegas residents still talk about. A parade down the Strip. Watch parties that drew tens of thousands. The Cup visiting schools, hospitals, and community centers across Clark County. That championship cemented hockey as the heart of Las Vegas sports culture.
Now, in 2026, the Golden Knights are back among the final four teams standing. The roster looks different from the 2023 championship team. Mitch Marner arrived in a blockbuster trade before the season and has been the team's best player, leading all playoff scorers with 18 points (7 goals, 11 assists) through 12 games. Carter Hart has provided stability in goal. Dorofeyev, a homegrown talent who came up through the Henderson Silver Knights, has emerged as a true star.
The connection between Henderson and Las Vegas in hockey is real. The Henderson Silver Knights had their best season in years in 2025-26, finishing 39-21-7 and making the AHL playoffs for the first time since 2022. They swept the San Jose Barracuda in the first round before falling to the Colorado Eagles. When VGK needed roster reinforcements, they called up three Henderson players: defenseman Dylan Coghlan, forward Braeden Bowman, and top prospect Trevor Connelly. Connelly, the team's 2024 first-round draft pick, posted 14 goals and 35 assists in 46 AHL games this season. The pipeline is working.
What Happens Next for the Golden Knights
The Western Conference Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Colorado Avalanche starts Wednesday, May 20 in Denver. The full schedule has been released. VGK returns home to T-Mobile Arena for Game 3 on Sunday, May 24 and Game 4 on Tuesday, May 26. If the series extends, Game 6 would be Saturday, May 30 in Las Vegas.
Colorado is a tough opponent. The Avalanche have their own stars and their own championship pedigree, having won the Stanley Cup in 2022. This matchup has all the makings of a classic series. Both teams play fast, skilled hockey. Both have elite goaltending. And both fanbases travel well, which means T-Mobile Arena will be packed with energy from both sides.
For the Golden Knights, the key players to watch remain the same. Marner is leading the entire NHL in playoff scoring. Eichel is distributing the puck at a historic pace. Dorofeyev is scoring at a clip that puts him in the conversation for the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. And Hart needs to stay sharp in net against a Colorado offense that can strike quickly.
The coaching matchup is also interesting. John Tortorella has gotten the most out of this VGK roster by leaning on depth, special teams, and a physical style of play. Howden's short-handed goals are a perfect example. The penalty kill has been a weapon, not just a survival tactic. If VGK can keep that up against Colorado, they have a real shot at reaching the Stanley Cup Final for the third time in franchise history.
Ryan's Take
I have lived in Las Vegas long enough to remember when people laughed at the idea of a hockey team in the desert. Nobody is laughing now. The Golden Knights have changed this city. They have given us something to rally around, something that brings every neighborhood together, from Summerlin to Henderson to North Las Vegas.
Watching Marner's goal 62 seconds into Game 6 was one of those moments where you just look around the room and everyone has the same expression. Pure joy. That is what playoff hockey does for Las Vegas. It fills restaurants, it fills bars, it fills living rooms with friends and family who might not otherwise get together on a Wednesday night.
As a real estate agent, I see it every day. People ask me about Las Vegas, and the Golden Knights always come up. Buyers moving here from other cities want to know about the team, the arena, the watch parties. It is part of what makes this city special. And when the team is winning, there is an energy in this town that you can feel whether you are at T-Mobile Arena or grabbing dinner in Green Valley.
Four more wins. That is all that stands between VGK and the Stanley Cup Final. I will be watching every minute, and I know most of you will be too. Go Knights Go.
