Correctional Officers and Dispatchers Buying Homes with Worker Advantage

by Ryan Rose

Correctional officers and dispatchers keep the Las Vegas valley safe behind the scenes, and the Nevada Worker Advantage Program includes both professions on its list of 47 eligible careers. Each qualifies for $20,000 in down payment assistance when purchasing a home.

How Correctional Officers and Dispatchers Qualify

Correctional officers and 911 dispatchers both appear on the Worker Advantage approved professions list. At least one borrower on the loan must hold a full time position in an eligible role. You need a minimum 640 credit score, six months of Nevada residency, and household income at or below $142,350 in Clark County.

The program is not restricted to first time homebuyers. Officers and dispatchers who have purchased a home before or currently own property can still apply. The maximum purchase price is $832,750, and the home must be your primary residence.

What the $20,000 Covers

The $20,000 is structured as a 0% interest second mortgage with no monthly payments. Repayment occurs only when you sell, refinance, or reach the end of the 30 year term. You can use the funds for your down payment, closing costs, or a mortgage rate buydown.

North Las Vegas offers the most affordable median prices in the valley at $410,000. At that price point, the $20,000 grant covers nearly 5% of the purchase price, potentially eliminating the need for any personal down payment savings when combined with an FHA loan.

Local Employers

Clark County Detention Center is one of the largest jails in the country, employing hundreds of correctional officers. Las Vegas City Jail, Henderson Detention Center, and High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs also staff significant numbers of corrections professionals. Dispatchers work across LVMPD communications, Clark County Fire dispatch, and Henderson and North Las Vegas 911 centers.

These facilities and dispatch centers are spread across the valley, giving you options for shorter commutes depending on where you buy.
