What Happened to Black Mountain Golf Course Henderson?
Black Mountain Golf and Country Club opened in 1958 as one of Henderson's original recreational landmarks and operated for six decades before closing in 2018. The closure came after years of declining membership and mounting financial losses exceeding $1.2 million during bankruptcy proceedings. Today, the former course is being transformed into Black Mountain Ranch, a Lennar master planned community approved for up to 1,100 homes by the Henderson City Council.
Why Did Black Mountain Golf Course Close?
The golf course struggled financially for years as membership declined and player revenue dropped. The club ultimately filed for bankruptcy, and according to bankruptcy attorney Candace Carlyon, losses exceeded $1.2 million during the bankruptcy period alone. The course could not sustain operations against rising maintenance costs and a shrinking customer base, a pattern seen at golf courses across the Las Vegas valley and nationwide.
The closure left surrounding homeowners facing an uncertain future. Many had purchased their homes specifically because they backed up to the open fairways and enjoyed the green space for walking and recreation.
What Happened After the Golf Course Closed?
A developer purchased the shuttered property and proposed a large scale residential development. The original proposal called for approximately 1,800 units combining single family homes and apartments. Community opposition was swift and vocal, with residents citing concerns about traffic, density, and the loss of open space that had defined their neighborhood for decades.
The Henderson City Council ultimately approved a scaled back plan allowing up to 1,100 homes on the property, with a 200 unit cap specifically on the Founders Nine portion of the former course. Lennar took over development and launched Black Mountain Ranch, which now includes multiple collections ranging from townhomes to estate style single family residences priced between $345,990 and $997,990.
What Does the Former Golf Course Look Like Now?
The transformation is well underway. Where fairways and greens once stretched across the Henderson landscape, new streets, model homes, and community parks now take shape. Lennar has incorporated amenities like a splash park, dog park, playgrounds, and BBQ areas to replace some of the open space the golf course once provided.
